Abstract

The problem that arises in learning to control electric motors and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) is the unavailability of controlled plant that are similar to real objects. This condition hinders the process of learning electric motor control techniques using a PLC. The PLC learning facility currently available at most vocational schools is a plant in the form of a simulation that is depicted with light or sound indicators. Practical equipment like that is difficult to use for students to understand how to control electric motors and PLC programming. Apart from these problems, PLC learning is still carried out using conventional methods. These two problems certainly do not support the achievement of competency of vocational school graduates. The problem of limited practical facilities will be resolved by providing several examples of the use of PLCs in controlling electric motors in elevator systems through the elevator simulator that will be developed. The learning method used during the practicum is the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method. Test results before and after training showed an increase in students' knowledge with scores from 551 to 849, while the increase in understanding among teachers rose from 108 to 145.
